Spanish circus reading activities can motivate your students to learn more than about the circus. A reading theme about a circus, as in this case, can help bilingual learners with vocabulary, writing, and letter identification.

While each student may learn differently, activities that can include different learning can enhance a deeper level of knowledge.

When you read together a fun bilingual story, you help your young readers develop more than literacy skills. By reading together, young bilingual learners can interact with different vocabulary in English and Spanish.

Besides helping with language skills, your students can learn about various topics in both languages. 

Bilingual Circus Story

The bilingual circus story is an adorable way to learn about the experiences of two friends in the circus. Aside from reading the story in English and Spanish, your children can learn various ways to use sight words, phrases, and common circus terms.

If you were using a circus or carnival theme, your bilingual students would engage in fun learning activities. Of course, reading the activities is an essential way to interact with the bilingual text.

After that, you can use other supplemental tasks to support the reading. For instance, you can use quick activities like bingo or scavenger games.

Additionally, you can add group games like a hot potato to see who gets the word.

  • In this case, you can select different words from the reading.
  • Then, print or write them on note cards. Next, paste a notecard to a play potato toy or similar toy.
  • Lastly, call the children to sing hot potato as the toy goes from one child to the next.

Activities like these can help your young readers to understand that reading is more than a passive activity. They can relate that reading can occur by learning along with other activities.

Spanish Circus Reading Activities – Letter Identification

Creating an interactive way for your bilingual readers to understand what they read can go beyond the quick tasks.

For instance, you can add other activities like the letter identification activity. With this learning game, your children will use a circus tent to simulate the inside and outside. 

  • Next, cut out the uppercase and lowercase letters from the sheet. 
  • Then, cut out the circus tent. Set aside. 
    • Optional: cut out the boxes of the circus friends to indicate the inside and outside of the tent. 
  • Place the uppercase letters on one side and the lowercase letters on the other side. 
  • After that, you can play a game of matching uppercase and lowercase letters. 
  • Try to ask children to match the letters you place on the inside with the ones outside. 
  • You could also do the opposite by placing the lowercase inside the tent and the uppercase letters outside. 
    • Optional: you can try this activity by using numbers and bilingual labels. 

A matching game of letters is a fun way to use beginning sounds and learning letter identification. Furthermore, you can also add hands-on activities like STEM projects

STEM Spanish Circus Reading Activities

Similarly, you can use a pom-pom launcher or shooter of pom-poms to create a letter matching activity. With a few simple household items, your young readers will become active readers. 

Using a Pom-Pom Launcher as a STEM activity

Recreate a launcher or cannon shooter similar to the ones seen in a circus. For instance, you can use the Spanish alphabet letters from the worksheets and the launcher. 

Materials for STEM Spanish Circus:

  • 7-cm pool noodle 
  • One balloon with the top cut off
  • Several pom-poms

Instructions:

  1. Only adults should cut the pool noodle and balloon pieces. 
  2. Cut about 7 cm of pool noodle and set aside.
  3. Cut the top of a balloon. 
  4. Place the bottom of the balloon around one of the sides of the pool noodle piece. 
  5. Tape or paste a variety of uppercase and lowercase Spanish alphabet letters to pom-pom pieces. 
  6. Place the pom-poms inside the pool noodle. 
  7. Launch each piece by extending the balloon and releasing it. 
  8. This motion allows the pom-poms to shoot out of the pool noodle and land on a surface. 

Once students take a turn in launching each pom-pom, group the letters according to uppercase or lowercase. Then, ask each bilingual learner to identify each letter and match them too. 

In conclusion, Spanish circus reading activities are more than using a text to learn about a new topic. You might want to also use other hands-on activities like STEM projects or crafts. These activities aid students in learning other language skills too.
