Spanish Fairy Tales Reading: Rapunzel

Spanish fairy tales are fun reading for young bilingual learners. With fairy tales, young readers can read about more than an entertaining story.

Fairy tales consist of specific elements that help readers understand the story. There are so many fantastic fairy tales in both English and Spanish.

Besides learning vocabulary, young bilingual readers understand the literary components of a story, purpose, and setting. 

Spanish Fairy Tales Elements

Spanish fairy tales can consist of simple literary elements. For instance, your readers can engage with a text and have fun identifying what is happening to the main character.

What do your young readers need to know?

A fairy tale, whether in English or Spanish, consists of:

  • A traditional phrase of beginning or ending of the story like ‘once upon a time’ or ‘happily ever after.’ 
  • The storyline consists of fantasy, supernatural, or extraordinary tales. 
  • Most likely, there are forces of good battling the forces of evil
  • There are royal characters like princes, princesses, queens, and kings. 
  • Usually, there are magical elements involved like talking animals, witches, wizards, or fairies. 
  • More significantly, there is a conflict that the main character must overcome. 
  • Most likely, the main character learns a moral lesson through the story. 
  • Fairy tales conclude with a happy ending

Bilingual Reading Stories

A few examples of bilingual fairy tales are Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and The Three Little Pigs. For example, Rapunzel is a lovely fairy tale about a young princess with long hair trapped in a tower by an evil witch.

While there are many variations of this story, your readers will enjoy reading the Spanish and English versions. That is, bilingual readers will consider various points in the story relevant to the plot.

As Rapunzel continues with her conflict, she eventually has a happy ending. As a result, knowing how to proceed from one part of the story to the next is essential for young readers.

While there’s a beginning, middle, and an end to the story, you might want to use other story elements. For instance, identify the characters, bilingual vocabulary, and the setting can help bilingual readers grasp more concepts. 

Aside from learning the literary elements of a story, you can also use other interactive activities. For instance, use STEM learning activities to emphasize science, technology, engineering, or mathematical concepts.

The best part of these activities is that your readers become active participants in the story. Consequently, in using the Rapunzel bilingual story, you might want to consider the STEM length learning activity. 

Materials for Spanish Fairy Tales Reading:

  • Empty paper towel roll
  • Craft stick
  • Character template
  • Paper – 10 cm
  • String – 30 cm
  • Yarn – 44 cm 
  • Safety scissors
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Markers 
  • Clothespin or clips (optional)


  1. Wrap the empty paper towel roll with brown construction paper (optional) or paste the tower template. 
  2. Cut and paste the Rapunzel character onto a craft stick. 
  3. Measure three different sizes for the paper, string, and yarn pieces. 
  4. Place Rapunzel on top of the tower. 
  5. Ask students to make different predictions about the length of each material. 
  6. Hold each material from the top of the tower to the bottom (not all materials will reach the bottom). 
  7. Answer the Measurement questions.

Measurement Questions:

  • First, begin with a measurement question about one of the materials such as “Measurement #1 – Paper”.
  • Next, continue with another material like “Measurement #2 – String”.
  • Then, proceed with the other material such as “Measurement #3 – Yarn”.
  • Also, use other questions such as “Which material is the longest?” or “Which material is the shortest?” to emphasize length variation.
  • You can end the discussion with “Which material should Rapunzel use to go down the tower?”

Spanish Fairy Tales Post-Discussion 

Encouraging young bilingual learners to read is a small part of reading. However, there are other ways to motivate them to discuss and engage with the text.

Of course, as more students interact with the text, they’ll understand the different elements of the story.

For example, using the questions from the activities emphasizes students’ understanding of characters, what the character learned, the conflict, and how to overcome it.

Then, the STEM activities further reinforce other subject areas to strengthen vocabulary and in-depth concepts. 

Besides the Spanish fairy tales like Rapunzel, you might want to consider the Three Little Pigs’ bilingual story. In this bilingual reading, young readers learn how three little pigs look for solutions in building their homes and overcoming bullying. 


In summary, Spanish fairy tales are excellent reading tools to encourage bilingual learners to read.
